The English along with Wales Pitted Together for RWC 2027 Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was conducted by sporting icons including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England and their Welsh counterparts will face off in an identical group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a major pool stage encounter in Australia. They are joined in Pool F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw recalls their memorable meeting in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' shock early exit.

Other Notable Pool Draws

Ireland alongside Scotland have likewise been drawn in a pool once again, just as the situation from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, Ireland secured a convincing win, with Scotland failing to advance to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, who each impressed as surprise packages in the last World Cup, complete that Pool D.

Notably, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from holders and top-ranked the Springboks before the final, presuming the Springboks top their own group.

Tournament Implications

Should the pools play out in line with the current world rankings, further top favourites like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would remain separated from the likes of the English and Ireland until the final.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that side of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts the Wallabies have been drawn together with their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will open the World Cup in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture designed to launch the competition.

In other groups, reigning champions South Africa have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and Romania. The French team are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Argentina will take on the Flying Fijians, Spain and Canada as the tournament grows to twenty-four nations from the twenty who took part in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a last-16 round for the very first time in the competition's existence.

Although the victor of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the game's heavyweights early on, they will have to face the runner-up from Group B – most likely the Italians – in the last 16.

A total of four of the remaining six pool winners will face a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
