This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a dare for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate scary movies: Settle in with your partner and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like standard physical horror, but within Together resides a profound examination about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Debut Feature Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have been together for a decade. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A familiar narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The entire film is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the fact he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie confront the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. At their core, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
